Clinical leadership in translational ataxia research
I will start by giving a brief overview of ataxia, including diagnosis, management, and current research priorities. Next, I will share own experiences gained from leading a group that includes both preclinical and clinical researchers, who jointly aim to progress the ataxia field towards therapeutics. Finally, I want to make a case for clinical leadership in translational research efforts and sketch which ingredients are needed to make those efforts succesful and sustainable.
Biography
Bart van de Warrenburg is a movement disorders expert within the Expert center for Parkinson & Movement disorders of the Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. In care and research, he focuses on rare and genetic movement disorders. For this group of disorders, the center is formally appointed by the Ministry of Health as an expert center, which he leads. He is actively involved in many international committees and task forces and in advisory boards of national patient organizations for various movement disorders. Van de Warrenburg leads or participates in many research projects, including those run by European consortia. His own research group does translational research on rare and genetic movement disorders, with a focus on mechanism-based interventions and trial-readiness.
