Pulsatility and expansion; friend or enemy of sustainability
Since the development of endovascular aorta repair (EVAR) in the late 80’s, it has become the standard treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms. Though successful in most cases, patients may still develop complications during follow-up. This may have something to do with the fact that the aorta and endoprostheses are challenged over 30.000.000 times a year by the cardiac pulsatility induced blood pressure wave and a single point on the aorta may travel from Enschede to Madagascar in 10 years. With our study into Aorta dynamics after endovascular aorta repair (ADEAR) we are gaining more and more insight in these phenomena. Together we will walk through the past and future perspectives of aorta dynamics.
Biography
Jaimy Simmering is born and raised in Twente and started the study Technical Medicine in 2012 in Twente as well. During her graduation internship she investigated dynamics of an endoprosthesis for abdominal aortic aneurysms at the Department of (Vascular) Surgery in the Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) hospital and the MultiModality Medical Imaging (M3i) group at the University of Twente. After her graduation this research project still had a lot of interesting opportunities, so she continued working on the project as a PhD candidate. Now it is almost 3 years later and more insights have been gained about the dynamics of endoprostheses, though there still is a lot to learn.
